New Unfors LuXi makes 'light work'
of performing QA on image displays

Unfors LuXi Light Meter

Unfors, the Swedish manufacturer of X-ray QA instruments recently introduced their new Luxi meter to meet the growing demand for an affordable, purpose made, precision instrument for performing QA on all types of workstation image display equipment (LCD and CRT) as well as X-ray film illuminators.

The Unfors Luxi meter is the culmination of an extensive research and development program that has produced a class B instrument with an excellent photopic response. The Unfors Luxi will perform contact luminance measurements in the range 0.05 - 50 000 cd/m2 while measuring illuminance with a perfect cosine match for ambient light in the range 0.05 - 50 000 lux. Luminance or illuminance measurements are automatically selected by either attaching or detaching the optical tube to the detector housing.

An active LCD display shows the current measurement which can be captured at the press of a button. Multiple measurements may be stored in non-volatile memory for exporting later or individual measurements can be instantly copied to an Excel spreadsheet via serial or Bluetooth communication.

Those who already own an Unfors Xi system for performing QA on X-ray equipment will be interested to know that the Luxi detector is also available separately and can be used with their existing Unfors Xi Base Unit in order to expand the capabilities of their system.

New radiation monitoring completes
Southern Scientific range of low
cost monitors

Southern Scientific has introduced the new PDR-150, an ambient gamma radiation monitor that completes the range of low-cost instruments designed and built by the company at its UK headquarters in Lancing, West Sussex.

Operated either by mains or battery, the PDR-150 has built-in audio alarms that provide 24-hour protection in the event of an increase in local gamma radiation.

The unit is built on traditional lines with an analogue display that belies the modern, sophisticated circuitry that ensures accurate and linear measurement up to 1 microSievert/hour. With an energy response down to 20Kev this monitor will find many applications in industry, medicine and research.

MiE gamma camera from Southern
Scientific used in heart studies
at the University of Birmingham

The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Birmingham, under the leadership of Professor Michael Frenneaux, has recently acquired an MiE Low Energy Mobile Scintron gamma camera in order to undertake clinical research in heart failure patients. The system, which was acquired from Southern Scientific and funded by the British Heart Foundation, provides flexibility and ease of use. It is being used to undertake exercise Cardiac MUGA scans, as well as forearm venous studies to assess the role of venous endothelial function in heart failure.

The MiE cameras are manufactured in Seth, Germany and are available in the UK through Southern Scientific. The systems have full ISO9000 acceptance, CE marks and full NEMA and IEC quality control accreditation.

Unfors DXR+ (Digital X-ray Ruler)

The Unfors DXR+

The new Unfors DXR+ (Direct X-ray Ruler) is the latest electronic gadget from the acclaimed Swedish manufacturer of X-ray Q.A. test instruments.

Measuring less than 15cm in length, this indispensable pocket sized tool provides the most convenient method available for checking the alignment of the Light Beam Diaphragm (LBD) with the actual radiation field without having to leave the room.

The DXR+ can be used on all types of general X-ray equipment including mammographic units and is extremely easy to operate. There are no switches to press since the DXR+ switches on and off automatically. Simply place the instrument in the X-ray beam and expose. A series of LCD sensors illuminate indicating the position of the X-ray field to within an accuracy of 2.5 mm. No image processing is required and no time or materials are consumed in order to obtain the result. The battery life is an amazing 6 - 8 years in normal use.
